Over the years, DMX made sure to keep her memory alive by sharing stories that highlighted her character, talent, and the joy she brought to others in her lifetime. His last comments on the singer came just before his death in which he opened up more about some of the times they spent together.

How DMX and Aaliyah’s friendship began

As DMX once explained to The Juice (via Billboard), he and Aaliyah became friends when they worked on Romeo Must Die (2000) and its soundtrack, which included the collaboration “Come Back in One Piece.”

“When I was on tour, she and Joel Silver came to my dressing room to see if I wanted to be a part of the movie,” he explained. “Most people would have their people call, but she came herself. I’m like, ‘Is this a trick question? You have to ask me if I want to be in a movie with Aaliyah? Hell yeah.’ We [then] met up in Vancouver to [do] Romeo Must Die.”

“She had a presence on TV that was incredible,” he continued. “It was sexy but kind of gangster.”
