A water tanker fully loaded has crushed at least four persons to death in front of the popular Nza Street, close to the Bush bar in Independence Layout, Enugu.

An eyewitness account reports that the tanker suspected to have lost control due to brake failure crashed into a tricycle, Keke, loading spot.

“The tanker came into Nza Street from UNICEF end and obviously must have lost its break and came crashing on Keke that loads opposite the Bush Bar,” the witness said.

“While the Keke driver died on the spot, the tanker sped on hitting down a woman and her child; the woman also died on the spot.”

“The tanker ended up in the compound sharing same fence with the Bush Bar before stopping.”

“A lot of persons are pinned down by the vehicle but we have seen four lifeless bodies so far; this is a very big tragedy,” he said.

Although the tanker driver disappeared from the scene to avoid being lynched by the angry mob, his tanker was set ablaze.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and his deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo on receiving the sad report visited the accident scene and the survivors at Posh hospital, New Haven.

The Governor made funds available with the hospital management to ensure the patients’ treatments is not hindered by funds and pledged to take care of any more medical expenses that may accrue from the survivors’ treatment.

Ugwuanyi while speaking with the people who gathered at the scene of the accident thanked those who rushed the survivors to the hospital for being proactive and condoled with the families of victims who lost their loved ones in the accident.
