Police shoot fruit seller dead in Ebonyi

A 25-year-old fruit seller, Elizabeth Agwu, has been shot dead in Ebonyi State.

The incident happened on Wednesday around 8pm in Enuagu village, in Onicha-Igboeze community, in the Onicha Local Government Area of the state.

The media  learnt that some policemen had gone to the area to harass some residents when the incident occurred.

The deceased, who was said to be the younger sister of a reporter with The Sun Newspaper in Ebonyi State, Mr Chijioke Agwu, was attending to her customers when she was hit by stray bullets.

Our correspondent learnt that Elizabeth died on the way to a hospital in Abakaliki, the state capital.

Chijioke said, “Policemen came to my village, Enuagu, Onicha Igboeze, in Onicha LGA today (Wednesday) to harass some residents. In the melee, they shot and killed my younger sister, who was selling fruits at the junction.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Loveth Odah, promised to investigate the incident, assuring that the culprits would be punished.
