After staying in darkness for one year without electricity, residents of Maiduguri metropolis, the capital of Borno state and its environs have a sigh of relief following the restoration of electricity supply.
Boko Haram insurgents had destroyed about ten electricity towers along Maiduguri-Damaturu Road, thereby plunging the state capital into total darkness for a year.
The Federal and Borno State governments have made several attempts to restore the 330kv line, but were not successful, until when the Ministry of Housing and Energy through the Rural Electrification Board resuscitated the 33kv line.
Borno state Commissioner for Energy Yuguda Vungas, while handing over the 33KV line transmitter along Damaturu-Maiduguri to Yola Distribution Company, said the achievement was recorded following directives of Governor Babagana Zulum to restore power to Maiduguri and its environs within 30days.
The Commissioner noted that the Board fulfilled the assignment within 20days, called on the Yola Electricity Distribution Company to fast track the distribution modalities and ensure adequate maintenance of the power supply.
Business managers of Bulunkutu and Yerwa office of the company Mr Usman Wakta and Hajiya Zainab Hassan explained that the 18 Megwatts received will be distributed to all feeders 6 hours daily.
