The Guardian and the Black Community ―A Marriage Renewal

Published

The community media offers a significant alternative to the profit-oriented scheme of corporate media. They are driven by social objectives rather than the private or profit motive; they empower people rather than treat them as passive consumers, and they nurture local knowledge rather than replace it with standard solutions.

Ownership and control of community media are rooted in and responsible to the communities they serve. Hence, they are committed to human rights, social justice, the environment, and a sustainable path to social, political, and economic development. As a community media, we help balance these inequities. We provide the means for cultural expression, community discussion, and debate. We supply news and information and facilitate political engagement. These propositions are consistent with the Guardian tradition – a philosophy that impels a collaboration of the media and the community with trust, open communication, economic empowerment, and social development.

My name is Anthony Obi Ogbo, and I am the President of Texas International Guardian Inc.  In May 2021, the Guardian will be 23 years in business as one of the boldest and brightest issue-oriented newspapers published in Houston. We have consistently promoted private enterprise, supported the responsible government, and advocated social justice.

We are the first black publication to reach out to both African- American and African communities.  Now the most read black/minority paper within the academic community, we are proud to remain trusted news and advertising medium for diverse business interests, including individuals, groups, and public entities. This, of course, makes the paper the official news source for Africans and African-Americans in the greater Houston metropolitan area.

Free from any corporate or political interests, we have successfully assumed the critical task of chronicling and interpreting, from a black world perspective, those events that are relevant to the existence of the Black race

In the Guardian tradition, we make news, and our job is to say it as it is. As our reader, you are also a part of the Guardian tradition, and we appreciate you dearly.
